Like naturopathic medicine, functional medicine aims to address the root cause of disease, including triggers such as nutrient deficiencies, imbalances of the microbiome, stress, toxins, food allergies or sensitivities, and/or genetics. Functional lab tests, such as stool, saliva or blood tests, help identify root cause.
Once triggers are identified, the functional medicine practitioner will create an individualized wellness plan to address the imbalances.
Dr. Mackenzie Prentice takes a functional medicine approach with her patients at Lakeside Natural Medicine. Consistent with our philosophy of using “food as medicine” here at Lakeside, she uses nutrition as first-line therapy. She can also recommend herbs and supplements along with prescription medications when necessary. She integrates mainstream medicine with natural medicine with the goal of optimizing the function of your body at its highest level.
