5 Reasons to Eat Tahini

BySarah Axtell, ND September 20, 2022

Tahini (or sesame seed paste) is one of the most nutrient dense foods. Here are 5 reasons to include tahini as part of your diet:

  1. Sesame seeds/tahini are a good source of protein20% protein by weight.
  2. Tahini also helps to stabilize blood sugar thanks to the fat, protein, and fiber it provides.
  3. Despite what the USDA would like you to believe, you can get calcium from other sources besides dairy! Tahini is rich in bone-building minerals, notably calcium and magnesium.
  4. Tahini is good for your heart. In this study, patients with high cholesterol who ate 4 TBSP per day saw significant improvements in their lipids (reduction in total cholesterol and LDL).
  5. Tahini helps to balance hormones. Seeds, such as sesame seeds/tahini and sunflower seeds, help to support progesterone production. It is best to eat these seeds during the second half of your cycle (day 15-menses). See here for more on seed cycling for hormone balance.

And not to mention the taste! It adds a rich creaminess to otherwise bland food. I love using tahini as part of a creamy salad dressing. You can also add spread it on baked goods or rice cakes with a drizzle of honey. Tahini is bitter so combining it with a small amount of honey or maple syrup is recommended! You can find it in the nut butter section at the grocery store, next to almond butter and peanut butter.

Tahini is one of the main ingredients in hummus. But let’s get creative and think beyond hummus! Here are some tasty tahini recipes:
