How to Choose the Right Water Filter

Tap drinking water can contain a number of contaminants that are associated with increased risk of multiple health problems including cancer, infertility and hormone disruption.

When you choose a water filter it is very important to make sure it’s getting out the right things. For example, there is arsenic in most city water supplies. Carbon filters, like the ones that come with your fridge or common store brands like the Brita filter, do NOT filter our arsenic.  To filter out arsenic you need reverse osmosis.

The EWG is a great resource for understanding what is in your water and what kind of filter you need.

Across the board, I am recommending Reverse Osmosis. It gets out all of the common contaminants and also helps reduce PFAS (the “forever” chemicals).

Steps for Choosing the Right Water Filter:

  1. First, find out what is in your water, visit the EWG’s website:  https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/
  2. Choose a filter that removes the specific contaminants found in your water.
  3. Be sure to choose one that is NSF certified. You can look up NSF certification here:  https://info.nsf.org/certified/dwtu/
