As we age, our bodies undergo a range of changes that can lead to chronic inflammation, often referred to as “inflammaging.” This persistent, low-grade inflammation can wreak havoc on our health, contributing to issues like joint pain, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The good news is that one of the most effective ways to manage inflammation is through the food we eat.
The Culprits: Foods That Fuel Inflammation
Certain foods can exacerbate inflammation, including:
- Processed meats
- Sugar
- Refined grains (like white bread, baked goods, and cereals)
- Fried foods
- Red meat and dairy

On the other hand, some foods have potent anti-inflammatory properties. These include:

Studies have shown that this diet can lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). By incorporating Mediterranean diet staples like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, you can help decrease inflammation in your body.
Managing Autoimmune Disorders
The Mediterranean diet has also shown promise in managing autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
