Wellness Lately: Some things I’ve been enjoying

Floating– The silence and weightlessness of floating calms my nervous system and relaxes my muscles (thanks to the 1000 lbs of epsom salt in the tank!). I find meditating difficult in the real world, but it comes easy in the floating pod. I go to Float MKE.

Limited screen time– In all honesty, my social media usage was getting out of hand. I recently set a daily limit of 30 minutes and it’s made a huge difference. Don’t get me wrong- I still love Instagram, especially the community and creative outlet it provides. I’m just more intentional about how I use it. It’s amazing how much more present, creative, and focused I feel now.

Tinned fish– I love canned salmon – it’s a convenient way to get my omega-3 fix, and the tiny bones packed in are a bonus source of calcium (don’t worry, they’re undetectable!). I was slower to warm up to sardines, but now I’m hooked – they’re a protein powerhouse that elevates any salad or snack plate.

Collard greens daily– I have a strong family history of osteoporosis, and I’m determined to prevent it. I don’t eat a lot of dairy, but I do love collards! One cup of collards has the same amount of calcium as a cup of milk. I’m committed to eating these daily. This bag of pre-chopped collards makes it easy. I add collards to smoothies and soups or saute them on the stovetop with a quick peanut sauce.

Weighted vest– It’s not about rocking a bikini. It’s about building strong bones. I wear a weighted vest on my walks and while doing chores around the house. Here is more info.

Fires– Sitting in front of a fire is one of the few times I can truly sit still, without feeling restless or like I should be doing something else. It’s a mindfulness practice that doesn’t feel like work at all – just pure, cozy bliss.

Ice skating A goal of mine this year is to PLAY more. And ice skating has been a great way to make that happen. It’s been a really fun way to mix things up and tap into my inner kid.

CBD mocktails-For me, having a drink means trading in a good night’s sleep and risking a headache the next day. While it’s sometimes worth it, I’ve come to realize that more often than not, it’s not. Lately, I’ve been opting for mocktails instead – and I love adding a dose of CBD to enhance the relaxing vibe. I like the Batch brand (we carry this at the clinic).

Puzzles– A calming activity I can do in the evening with my teen daughters. We can either talk and catch up or just be quiet together.
