CBD for Relaxation: Alternative to Your Glass of Wine

BySarah Axtell, ND October 27, 2023

We know alcohol is not good for us on a regular basis- its hard on the liver, increases the risk of cancer, negatively impacts the gut microbiome, triggers hot flashes and night sweats, promotes weight loss resistance, ramps up anxiety, disrupts sleep….the list can go on and on. Don’t get me wrong- I do love an occasional cocktail, but I try to limit alcohol to weekends/special occasions. I encourage my patients to limit alcohol to at most 4 alcoholic drinks per week.

So what herbs can you turn to when you want to get out of fight or flight mode, de-stress after a long day, or simply just chill?

My favorite alternative to alcohol for relaxation and bliss is CBD. CBD works within an hour or so to calm the nervous system. I like Batch CBD by Wisconsin Scientific due to their ethically sourced hemp and use of the full spectrum CBD. Another reason why I like Batch CBD is the fact that they do internal testing and provide certificates of analysis from third-parties for a full disclosure that their product is free of pesticides, heavy metals, mold, and other toxins. We carry Batch CBD at our office.

I put 1-2 dropperfuls in sparkling water or my favorite Trader Joe’s ACV drinks. Drink out of a fancy glass and sit back and relax!

CBD is generally safe, and adverse effects are mild and mostly dose dependent. If you are considering adding CBD to your routine, check with your Naturopathic Doctor on dosing and interactions.

Here is more info on the basics of CBD.

Other herbs to create more inner peace:

  • Chamomile
  • Ashwagandha
  • Lemon balm
  • Passionflower
  • Tulsi

Here are some of my favorite mocktails.

Cheers!
