Which Adaptogen is Right for You?
BySarah Axtell, ND •June 18, 2024
Each of us respond to stress differently. Some people get exhausted, some get anxious, some feel “wired but tired,” and some fall into depression. Adaptogenic herbs, or adaptogens, can be help the body adapt by normalizing physiological processes in times of high stress. In layman’s terms, adaptogens make everyone in your life become less annoying! All adaptogens have different characteristics and mechanisms of actions. Here are some of my favorite adaptogenic herbs:
Ashwagandha– calming, improves anxiety and sleep, supports the thyroid
Rhodiola– energizing, improves depression, improves focus, enhances exercise endurance
Maca– enhances libido, supportive for hot flashes and menopausal symptoms, energizing, enhances fertility
Astragalus- immune modulating, anti-viral
Reishi– immune supportive, hormone balancing, improves brain fog
Holy Basil- reduces anxiety, improves brain fog
Adaptogens are a beautiful way to bring us back from the edge of burnout. BUT it’s best to not use them alone- lifestyle modification is crucial: sleep, nutrition, minimizing caffeine, boundaries, movement.
It’s best to talk to your ND (and possibly test your cortisol) to see which adaptogen is best for you.
