Spirulina: the Superfood of the Sea
BySarah Axtell, ND •June 13, 2024
Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is arguably one of the most nutrient-dense greens on the planet. It offers numerous health benefits:
- Lowers cholesterol
- Aids in weight loss
- Good source of vitamin B12, beta-carotene, iron, calcium and phosphorous
- Anti-inflammatory, immune modulatory, and antioxidant
- Good source of protein. Protein makes up ~60-70% of spirulina’s dry weight.
- Prevents cognitive decline
- Slows the aging process by protecting your mitochondria. Damaged mitochondria accelerates aging and disease progression. Mitochondria are the powershouses within your cells that generate cellular energy. As you get older, mitochondria become dysfunctional, which leads to more rapid aging, fatigue, and increased risk of chronic disease. One of the best ways you can protect your mitochondria is with spirulina, thanks to the very high Superoxide dismutase (SOD) content, which helps to scavenge free radicals and combat oxidative stress within the mitochondria.
You can add spirulina powder to smoothies, beverages, hummus, pesto, and salad dressings.
