Why are hangovers getting so much worse with age?

BySarah Axtell, ND March 3, 2025

If you feel like your hangovers have gotten worse with age, you aren’t imagining things.

Here are 3 physiologic reasons why.

  1. Liver metabolism: Liver metabolism naturally slows as we age.

As you get older, your liver has fewer enzymes to break down alcohol, meaning alcohol stays in your system longer.  And glutathione production in the liver decreases as we age, so cells may not be recovered or repaired as rapidly.

You can take a liposomal glutathione supplement before drinking, which may protect the liver from oxidative damage, making you feel less crappy the next day.

  1. Hormones: Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect the body’s ability to process alcohol effectively

Fluctuating estrogen levels can get in the way of metabolizing alcohol.

  1. Dehydration: Aging can also impact our body’s ability to stay hydrated. The more dehydrated we are, the worse hangover is.

This is thus the importance of staying hydrated with electrolytes.

And in addition to feeling hungover, alcohol is going to make your perimenopausal symptoms so much worse!

So the question we must ask- Is it worth it? If I’m choosing to have a drink, I’m choosing not to sleep or to have a headache the next day. It may be worth it at times- a night out with friends. But lately I’m finding it’s just not worth it.
