The Healing Powers of Gelatin

Most people know gelatin as the translucent “jelly-like” ingredient used to make homemade
jello-jigglers, and often a main ingredient in puddings, yogurt and gummy candies. Although not typically thought of as a healthy nutrient, when used appropriately, gelatin has many health benefits.
More traditional diets were much higher in gelatin than the modern American diet. Many
cultures had diets that consisted of consuming many more parts of an animal than we do today,
including parts high in gelatin such as bones and connective tissue. We often don’t practice whole-
animal eating like many of our ancestors did.
When making homemade bone broth, boiling the bones extracts the gelatin protein which
partially solidifies when cooled. Gelatin is a protein derived from collagen-rich parts of an animal. It
contains proteins and antioxidants which protect cells in the body and can support healthy digestion,
bones, skin and joints.
- Gut Healing Properties
– Gelatin can improve digestion by enhancing the secretion of stomach acid to break
down food for nutrient absorption.
– Gelatin promotes water absorption into the intestines, which keeps fluid in the digestive
tract for healthy bowel movements.
– Gelatin has amino acids in the gut improves the health of the intestinal cells and acts as
an anti-inflammatory. Whole Protein gelatin is best for the gut. - Cardiac Health
– Gelatin can balance out the methionine found in meat and eggs. Methionine raises the
homocysteine level; a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and mental illness. - Skin Health
– Gelatin is rich in two amino acids used to produce collagen: proline and glycine.
Providing these collagen building blocks ensures the body can create enough collagen
for healthy skin.
– Preliminary research shows gelatin may also protect from aging effects of sunlight. - Bone and Joint Health
– Gelatin contains calcium and magnesium, both for which are beneficial for bone health.
– Gelatin contains amino acids important for collagen production, which is important joint
health. - Sleep and Mental Health
– Gelatin contains glycine which may improve sleep.
– Glycine (found in gelatin) inhibits norepinephrine, a stress hormone associated with anxiety.
