How To Mindfully Eat Sweets

BySarah Axtell, ND December 11, 2025

I have a sweet tooth, and I have dessert every single night. Rather than deprive myself, I find mindfully eating the dessert to be a balanced approach. I try to be intentional about my choices- indulging in quality dark chocolate or homemade chocolate chip cookies. Sweets are part of traditions, celebrations, and holiday gatherings, and it’s simply not realistic for most people to avoid sugar completely. A lot of people however can feel out of control when it comes to sweets. Part of having a positive and balanced relationship with food is to be able to enjoy the foods you love without feeling out of control or guilty when you indulge.

Here’s a few things you can try to get started on mindfully eating sweets:

1. Ask yourself which sweet you really want.

2. Put it on a plate and sit down to eat it. By doing so, you’re creating a ritual around something you enjoy, and that can make the experience way more satisfying. It’s like telling yourself, “Hey, this matters. I’m worth taking the time to enjoy this.”

3. Let go of the scarcity mentality- you can have dessert again tomorrow.

4. If possible, make the treats yourself to ensure there is some protein and/or fiber in them (I always add flax to my baked goods). This helps to keep blood sugar stable and promotes satiety.

Here are some of my favorite sweets recipes:

Enjoy!
